I love the look of intent on the lionesses face in this shot. She had been playing with her cub in the bushes when another lioness started to approach them. As the other lioness got closer, the mother became more alert, stopped playing and focused solely on the approaching lioness.
They eventually met each other, with a slightly strained greeting then the mother made it clear the lioness was not allowed near her cub, she pushed her body weight into her to keep her at a distance (even though the curious cub was trying to get closer) and after a snarl from the mother the other lioness tucked tail and ran off.
I just love seeing how protective a wild animal can be with its young!
