A shocking wildlife poisoning incident has struck Ndutu, Endulen Ward in Tanzania's Ngorongoro District, where 10 lions were killed on September 19, 2026, allegedly poisoned in a revenge attack after the predators killed herders' donkeys. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) and police are investigating the lion deaths, which coincide with suspicious damage to local water infrastructure raising concerns that herders may be pushing to access restricted conservation land amid growing human-wildlife conflict in the region.
Preliminary reports from the Ndutu area, Endulen Ward, Ngorongoro District, indicate that on September 19, 2026, a total of 10 lions were killed in an incident believed to be linked to a revenge attack, after the lions killed and ate two donkeys belonging to local herders in the area.
Initial reports indicated that five lions had died at around 4:00 AM. Later reports revealed that the number had risen to 10.
According to these reports, the lions are believed to have been fed a poisoned carcass, in an act allegedly carried out by some herders following the killing of the donkeys, which was reported to have occurred on September 17, 2026.
Police, together with rangers from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), have arrived at the scene and are continuing investigations to determine the cause of death and identify everyone involved.
Should it be confirmed that individuals were involved in killing the wildlife, appropriate legal action will be taken in accordance with the law.
This incident comes as the Ndutu area has also been affected by incidents of damage to water infrastructure. In August and September 2026, several boreholes and pipelines built by the NCAA were reported to have been vandalized.
Preliminary assessments have raised allegations that this damage may be intended to create water shortages, thereby fostering conditions to demand that livestock be allowed into areas that have been restricted for conservation purposes
